More of us than ever now work from home, and research shows that in many ways it’s good for us. Home based workers tend to be happier and have fewer sick days, although there are some health concerns that we all need to be aware of. Here are three things to consider.
Give yourself time off
When you work for yourself, it can feel like every waking moment you’re in ‘work mode.’ When your home is also your workplace and you and you alone are responsible for earning enough to pay the bills, chances are you have days where you’re doing something work related from the moment you wake up to the time you go to bed. It might be answering emails over breakfast or typing up reports while you watch the kids during the day. It might be multitasking scheduling appointments and cooking dinner, and then wrapping up the final bits for the day on your phone as you lie in bed at night. It’s not good to do this, you might think you’re being productive but actually you could be harming your workflow and quality. Flexibility is one great thing about working for yourself, but it doesn’t mean you need to avoid structure altogether. For the most part, having a regular schedule means that within those working hours you can get down to business and then after you’re done you can take a proper break away. Of course, you always have the option of changing things around or making up time elsewhere if you need to, but staying in a general routine most days can definitely help.
Find ways to relax
Working for yourself can be incredibly rewarding but it’s also stressful and hard work. Having ways to relax is good for your productivity as well as your mental and physical health. You could take occasional trips to the spa, book in for massages, facials and other treatments. You could have a hot bath, meditate or just schedule time to sit around and not do much- curl up with a good book or watch a movie on Netflix. CBD oil can be useful too, wellness cannabis use is growing as it’s safe and legal. Find ways to relax and unwind, it’s good for your business and good for you.
Eat well and get enough exercise
Again, working for yourself can be hard work meaning your business is often your number on priority. So it’s easy to put yourself second, so exercise and eating well can slip. It’s especially problematic when you work a sedentary job as it can cause all kinds of health issues surrounding sitting all day and not moving your body enough. Meal prepping healthy lunches that you can keep in the fridge and eat all week takes the hassle out of eating well- big batches of wholemeal pasta salad for example are cheap, tasty, easy and healthy. How about hitting the gym during your lunch break a couple of times a week, or walking your dog? You’ll feel re-energised returning to work in the afternoon and will do your mind and body a favour.
