There’s no denying that there have been giant strides made forward when it comes to gender equality, but it’s also true that there is still a long way to go until we can say that we have an entirely gender-equal world. One of the areas where inequality is felt most sharply is in the difference in the amount of money that men and women earn. A recent study found that the wage gap is still around 32%, which shows just how far we have to go.
Of course, the majority of people want to close this gap — making things fairer will help men as well as women, after all. The tricky part is figuring out how to get there. There is research that suggests it’s usually subconscious biases that result in men ending up in the better-paying jobs. So the natural answer would be that we need to get rid of these biases. But of course, that is no easy feat: we all carry our biases, and overcoming them will require a lot of work, if it’s even possible at all.
So perhaps we need something to overcome our biases for us. Research has suggested that using data and analytics can help to remove some of these biases. For example, rather than basing the hiring process on the subjective interpretation of the hiring committee, a business could standardize the hiring process, and remove names and photos from the hiring process.
