As your business grows, you may well outgrow the office that you are in. When you started out, you may have only had a small number of employees, but now you might all be a bit crammed in.
Finding a more spacious premises to run your business from is only half the battle. You will need to pack everything up, set yourself up in your new place, deal with all of the administration that goes along with the move; and all with a minimal impact on your productivity.
Choose The Right Time To Move
Downtime can be costly to any business and there is never a good time to carry out a major change such as an office relocation. However, your business may have peaks and troughs within its trade.
Look to move during your quietest period. Often, the quietest time of year might be when you prepare yourself for the busier periods. As this might well be the case, you will need to compensate for this so that it does not have a knock-on effect to your productivity and profitability during peak seasons.
You could look at carrying out the bulk of the work outside of business hours so that it has minimal effect on your workload.
You may need to ramp up the workload in the run up to the move. Hiring temporary workers or offering overtime hours can help to make sure that you get everything done.
Managing The Move
Start packing things up as early as possible. If employees are generally working from desktop terminals that need to packed-up, if possible, use laptops instead.
Box up anything that can get boxed up ahead of the move. If you leave things until the last minute, then it will be a rush to get everything done.
If furniture needs disassembling prior to being transported, do this a few days before you go.
Start shopping around early for suitable van hire or removal firms. Work out the logistics. How many loads it will take to transport everything.
Updating Your Address
Updating your address straight away will be very important. The address on your website and social media accounts will need to be changed, and you should immediately inform Google as well as any online business directories. Having outdated information online could end up costing your business.
If the registered address is changing, you will need to let the authorities know, as well as the banks.
Make a list of places that need to be informed about your move as early as possible. You can set to work informing them of the changes ahead of the actual move.
Getting Your Services Set Up
Your new address needs to be ready for you to start work straight away. That means that all of your comms need to be installed and set up ahead of time. Get in touch with your internet service provider well in advance and ensure that they give an installation date for your connection that is earlier than your move date.
