Getting the message across can be a challenge for any business. People live such busy lives, and heir worlds are filled with information. You will only have the smallest window of opportunity to communicate with your customers before their attention is drawn elsewhere. Your customers need to know who you are, and what the idea is that you are selling immediately.
It’s not about the font you use or getting a strong tape for signage; it is about clearly telling the reader what you want them to understand. Here are some tips to help create a punchy marketing text.
Plan
All marketing needs to work to a strict plan. Work out what you want to get out of the assignment. Are you selling the brand or the product? Knowing what the goal is will help you determine the route you will take. Plot the things that you want to say, and then tell them.
Know Where Your Words Will Be Read
It is essential that you know where your words will be read. If you feature in a specific magazine or blog, you may need to appeal to a certain demographic. Knowing your audience will help you cater to their tastes.
Don’t Waste Words
Whether you are writing a billboard ad or a blog post, words should be used concisely. If you can say something in five words, do not use ten. Don’t fill a small space with big words, and get to the point as quickly as possible. Avoid flowery language, you need to be using words that a schoolkid can understand.
Avoid Cliche
Unless you have a smart play on an overused turn of phrase, you should avoid including it. Filling your writing with common-all-garden sayings and metaphors may seem like an excellent shorthand way of saying something, but it is dull. Nobody wants to read things that they have read thousands of times before.
Keep Sentences Short
Avoid run-on sentences. Too many clauses in one sentence will make for difficult reading. If possible, keep sentences below fifteen words. If you can cut words out during the edit and retain meaning, do so.
Know Your Own Voice
When you are communicating with your audience, you need to maintain the same style and voice throughout. Inconsistencies will be confusing to read, and you will lose your reader.
Be Personal
If you want to connect with somebody, you will have to show them humanity in your words. It may mean throwing in some humor or adding in an anecdote. If people read your writing as though it was written by a real person, they are more likely to relate.
Practice
Hands down, the best way to become great at writing copy is just to get on and do it. Practice daily and you will find that you naturally start writing with a punch!
