It’s always fun to pick up a camera and begin shooting, but it’s also true that after a while it can start to feel a bit like the same old, same old. At this point, you’ll need to find inspiration and head into new directions. Luckily, photography is as broad and varied as any other artistic pursuit, and that means there are plenty of ways to mix things up. If you’re in need of some inspiration, try taking one of the pieces of advice that we’ve outlined below.

Take a Trip
Variety is the spice of life. Throwing ourselves into new environments is a surefire way to give our brain the creative kick that it needs to elevate our photography process. If you’ve just been taking snaps of areas around your home, then pack up your camera bag and set sail for a new destination. It’s a good idea to choose a place that’s different from what you have back home. For example, if you live in a city, then visit natural spots or small towns; if you live in a more rural spot, then a big city will provide a refreshingly different backdrop.
New Styles
The early stages of photography are all about finding your style, the medium in which you feel most comfortable in expressing yourself. However, one mistake that many photographers make is that they end up staying with the style that came naturally when they first started. Eventually, you’ll grow tired — that’s why it’s a good idea to look at progressing and outright changing your style. It’ll keep things interested. All the best artists have played around with their form of expression, even when they were already onto a winning thing (see David Bowie as the prime example). If you’ve been photographing landscapes, take a look at buildings. If you’ve been photographing people, take a look at how you’re snapping them — boudoir photo sessions are an excellent way to see an alternative way of shooting people, for example.
You already know you do your current style well. Mix things up.
Take a Course
There’s a pretty low entry barrier when it comes to photography, but the sky’s the limit. There are endless amounts of equipment and styles to play around with. But they can be a minefield to navigate. As such, why not look at taking a course from a professional? They’ll be able to show you how to A. make the most of your current camera’s features, and B. suggest how you can take it to the next level.
Follow Others
They say if you want to be a great writer, you should read as much as possible. The same, more or less, can be applied to photography. If you want to step up, then you need to see how the masters are doing things. You’ll want to retain your own style, but your game will be elevated if you’re aware of the quality that’s possible. Instagram is a particularly good place to see the world’s best photographers.
